Managed firewall

Managed firewall: the front door of your network in safe hands

Your firewall decides what may enter and leave your network. We set it up, keep it current and adapt it as your organisation changes. You request a change, we take care of the rest and document it.

What it is

A firewall is only as good as the way it is managed

Installing a firewall is one thing. Keeping it in good shape year after year is the real work: a new rule for a supplier, an extra branch, more people working from home, a camera that needs its own place, and firmware that has to stay current. With a managed firewall, that work sits with us. We know your network, keep a constant eye on the device and carry out changes in a controlled way. Every rule has a reason and is written down. Your firewall stays clear and tidy, even after years of small adjustments.

  • Firewall rules that are correct, documented and reviewed periodically
  • Firmware updates as planned, outside busy hours
  • Secure remote access with multi-factor sign-in
  • Separate networks for the office, guests, devices and production

What you get

One point of contact
You request changes from people who already know your network, without having to explain everything first.
Documentation
An up-to-date overview of rules, connections and settings that is always ready.
Monitoring
We see how your firewall and connections are performing and schedule improvements in good time.

The ongoing work

What managing a firewall actually involves

A firewall does not need daily attention from you, but it does need it from someone. This is what we do on an ongoing basis, so the device keeps doing what you bought it for.

  • Creating, changing and tidying up rules, with a recorded reason for each one
  • Assessing and scheduling firmware and security updates
  • Keeping an eye on connections, load and availability
  • Saving the configuration, so you can always go back to a working version
  • Periodically checking that the setup still suits the way you work

Connecting

Letting home workers, branches and suppliers in securely

A business today has more entrances than the office front door. Colleagues work from home or on the road, a second location needs access to the same systems and the supplier of your machines or software wants to connect remotely. We arrange all of that neatly through the firewall: a VPN with multi-factor sign-in for staff, a secure link between your branches and supplier access that is open only to what they need.

Because we handle the management, you always know who can reach your network from outside. When you stop working with a supplier, we close their access again.

Segmentation

A managed firewall that divides your network into logical parts

Not everything needs to talk to everything else. Guests need internet, not access to your server. Printers, cameras and access control systems get their own part of the network. And in a production hall or greenhouse, we keep machines and controllers separate from the office. The firewall guards the boundaries between those parts.

That makes your network clearer and calmer. If something unexpected happens somewhere, it stays within one part and we can see more quickly where it came from.

More than a device

Firewall management as part of your security

A firewall works best together with everything else. With us, network, system administration and Cybersecurity sit with the same team, so a change to the firewall fits with what happens on your servers and devices. If you take detection and response, the signals from your network also go to the SIEM, where a SOC assesses them day and night.

If your systems run in ANYBASE, our private cloud in a Tier 3 designed data centre in the European Union, a managed firewall is included as standard, with separate networks per application. And if you want management and security in one agreement, Digital Care Managed Operations is there for you.

Situations

Where a managed firewall makes the difference

Every organisation uses its firewall differently. These are situations where management by a dedicated team pays off.

Hybrid working

Part of the team works from home or at client sites. A VPN with multi-factor sign-in gives them the same access as in the office, and we check that the connections keep running smoothly, even as the number of home workers grows.

Two or more locations

A second office, a workshop or a warehouse is connected through a secure link between the firewalls. Every location gets the same rules, and a new branch is up and running from day one.

Machines, greenhouses and installations

Where controllers and sensors are connected to the network, we keep them separate from the office. Suppliers get targeted remote access for maintenance, only to their own installation and only for as long as needed.

Sensitive data

If you work with medical, financial or personal data, you want to know exactly who can access what. Documented rules and an up-to-date overview help you with NEN 7510, ISO 27001 and NIS2.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about a managed firewall

What is the difference between having a firewall and a managed firewall?

A firewall is a device or service that lets traffic through or blocks it. A managed firewall adds the management: we keep the software current, carry out changes, monitor that everything works properly and document the setup. You notice the difference most after a few years, when the rules are still correct and someone knows exactly why each one is there.

Can you take over our existing firewall?

Often, yes. We start with an inventory: which device is in place, how it is configured and which rules have been added over the years. Whatever is in good order we take over and document. Rules without a clear reason we discuss with you. If the device is due for replacement, you receive a well-reasoned proposal that you can schedule whenever it suits you.

How do I request a change, for example access for a supplier?

You let your regular point of contact know who needs access and what for. We assess whether it can be done safely, set it up as narrowly as possible and record when and why the rule was created. If the supplier only needs temporary access, we agree straight away when it will close again. That keeps your firewall tidy.

Will we notice anything of updates?

As little as possible. We assess updates in advance and schedule them for times that affect you least, usually outside working hours. You know beforehand when it will happen, and because we keep the configuration, we can always go back to a working version. If you work in shifts or around the clock, we agree the timing with you.

Is a firewall enough to be properly secure?

It is an important layer, but not the only one. A firewall watches what goes in and out of the network. On top of that you need endpoint protection on your devices, updates for your systems, multi-factor sign-in on your accounts and colleagues who know what to do with a strange email. We are happy to arrange all of that with you, as one whole.
